Cutting and sewing lessons from Vera Olkhovskaya
In this video, a master class on cutting techniques for beginners, I show cutting dresses with a half-sun skirt.
Before you start watching, take a look video tutorial on the development of this style from idea to finished pattern
And do not forget that the features of the cut follow from the features of sewing ...
Dress patterns for video lesson
I printed out the ready-made patterns that I developed myself, chose the size of the pattern I needed and cut out the patterns.
Please note that I immediately cut out all the notches on the patterns that were applied to the pattern drawings.
These are notches at the highest point of the sleeve hem, at the center of the notch for cutting the skirt and at the base of the one-piece shelf stand - they will greatly simplify the process of sewing the dress for me.
At the tops of the darts, I cut out small diamonds, otherwise the tops of the darts on the fabric, when marking them and when sewing, may turn out to be lower than I designed.
I start cutting by folding the fabric in half face to face, aligning the edges that I have parallel to the edge of the table.
I lay the patterns of the front and back on the fabric, taking into account the allowances for the seams and determine the width of the layout for the bodice of the product.
As you can see, the fabric is wider than the bodice with allowances, so I fold the fabric to fit the width of the front and back layout.
I cut it out immediately with allowances for the seams, without marking, since the markings are very poorly visible on this fabric, and if you strongly direct it with chalk, the line will turn out to be thick and there will be no more accuracy.
When the bodice is cut out, I turn to cutting the half-sun skirt.
I lay out the fabric in one layer, the edge is parallel to the edge of the table, and I place the semicircle of the notch at a distance of 5 cm from the edge to bevel the middle seam of the skirt.
Then, I cut out in parts a semicircle of a notch and a semicircle of a skirt along the bottom, measuring its length from the notch.
Having cut out a part of the skirt, I put it under the notch and cut the next fragment along it.
The middle seam must be beveled, otherwise the skirt will sag on the sides, and the back seam will look tight. Ahead of the semi-skid, I have a shared thread and there will be no sagging.
Before sewing, it is advisable to moisten the skirt and hang it for a couple of days.
When the skirt has sagged, it will need to be trimmed and cut at the insertion of the regilin, as originally planned.
The sleeve remains.
I am not talking about the collar and cuffs in this video tutorial on cutting, since I will not have them from this fabric and I will shoot a separate video master class for their manufacture.
And I lay the sleeve on the lunges of the fabric that remained from cutting the skirt.
I doubled them up.
Sleeve cut on an oblique thread.
