Description of construction

The name reveals the design features of this model - a sundress cut at the waist. The bodice is of a corset type, and the skirt is straight with a relief slit.

Please note that this sundress can be sewn in several versions.

For example, a skirt can be gathered, as in the photo, or with pleats instead of gathering. Or even just a straight skirt with a slit.

The sundress can be made with or without lining, although if the skirt is ruched or pleated, lining is recommended.

What fabric is suitable for a cut-away sundress with a corset bodice?

Pattern of a summer corset sundress with a straight skirt photo 2Thin, dense and well-draped fabric is ideal for sewing such a sundress, especially if it does not wrinkle.

It is better to use synthetic fabric or fabric with the addition of synthetics.

Choose material from the silk assortment, that is, from thin dress silk and crepe chiffon or crepe de Chine.

A “lining” for the dress (“cover”) will definitely be needed. Of course, you can refuse it, but only under certain conditions.

You should not choose material for the “cover” from lining fabrics. The best solution would be thin satin silk.

Since the corset part in this model does not have a tightening, it is worth using silicone braid or hard regilin as “bones”.

Don't forget a long zipper and strap hardware or ready-made straps.

The consumption of the "top" fabric will be from 120 to 170 cm with a width of 150 cm.

The consumption of the “lining” is 90–130 cm with the same width.

How to cut a cut-off sundress with a corset bodice using a ready-made pattern

How to cut a summer corset sundress with a straight skirt using a ready-made pattern, Fig. 2We start cutting after choosing the size and style option (gathering, pleats, straight skirt, with or without lining...).

Seam allowances – 1–1,2 cm. At the bottom of the skirt – 3–4 cm, depending on the finishing. At the bottom of the bodice - 4 cm for fitting.

The cutting is done on the fabric in a spread, that is, the fabric is laid out in one layer face up to avoid tangling.

On the Fig. 2 shows the cutting of a product on a lining with assembly according to the relief.

On the Fig. 3 - a product with pleats along the relief of the skirt.

How to sew a seam sundress with a corset bodice

When starting to sew, you need to understand that this model is not intended to shape the figure, like a corset. The bodice does not require tightening, since the beauty of this model is revealed only with the use of “delicate” fabrics that cannot withstand heavy loads on the seams.

There is a zipper in the middle back seam if you need pockets. Or in the left side seam if pockets are not needed.

As with other models cut at the waist, a fitting is required, during which the bodice and skirt are adjusted separately.

Height correction is made by adjusting the length of the bodice and the length of the straps, so it is better to use ready-made ones that have the ability to adjust the length.

How to cut a corset sundress with a straight skirt using a ready-made pattern, Fig. 3Once the bodice and skirt are completely finished, they can be basted together and a second fitting can be done before final joining.

Essentially, the sewing sequence looks like this:

  1. Assembling the bodice. Apply the zipper either by machine or by hand.
  2. Assembling the skirt. Sweep (another) zipper.
  3. Fitting.
  4. Baste the bodice and skirt, baste the “general” zipper and carry out another fitting. At the second fitting, you can make a final correction of the volume of the product along the middle back seam.
  5. The end is the connection of the bodice with the skirt.
