sewing lessons from Vera Olkhovskaya
Just think, some ten years ago there was a joke: “I’ll buy an overlocker. I'll take a look at what it is."
Now the venerable public is tormented only by those questions that modern search engines cannot answer. So, what to replace it with?
Ask the girls who got their grandmother's "Heads" and "Singers" from the mezzanine and the tailors did not dull the overlock knife in time ...
I tried to analyze the most popular answers to this question today in the video master class on sewing
It should be emphasized that it is not always possible to replace an overlock, and most traditional replacement methods will be significantly inferior to an overlock overcasting seam.
Using different seams
First, I’ll talk about replacement methods that are suitable in rare cases.
For example, in products made of chiffon or cambric, you can use a double seam.
In addition to sewing products from thin fabrics, a double seam is also used for sewing bed linen - pillowcases and duvet covers.
In products made of thin cotton or linen fabric, in many cases a sewing seam will also be appropriate.
See what is a backstitch and how to do it.
A great example of the use of a seam (its second name is “underwear seam”) would be men's underpants and cotton shorts.

Overlock stitches and how to use them
But let's move from the "grandmother's" methods to more modern ones and consider the option offered by the manufacturers of the new generation of sewing machines.
I am referring to the use of overcasting stitches (fig. 1).
They should be used with a special foot, but if you do not have one, and the cut needs to be overcast, I suggest taking as a temporary replacement, I emphasize, only temporary, a blind stitch foot. It looks like a foot for sewing along the edge and, in principle, you can overcast the cut with it.
And about using this sewing machine accessory as the manufacturer intended, see in the video tutorial on sewing a dress how to process the bottom.

How to replace the overlock - option two
The second option for replacing the overlock is a favorite among extra-class craftsmen - edging the cuts of parts with an oblique trim.
But, if you decide to learn how to sew with your own hands, then you have to master one of the ways of edging slices.
In this video master class on sewing, you will see the work of a binder for household sewing machines, which is adjustable in width. In my opinion, it is more convenient than unregulated.
But, if you don’t have the device, you can also turn over the cut manually.
Watch the video tutorial on sewing how to edge a cut with an oblique trim in a home workshop on the example of sewing a skirt.
Please note that the bias binding for fixtures and for manual processing of sections is different.
For binders, bias binding can be purchased or made with tools.

Please note that the presence of all the listed substitute stitches is only found in fairly expensive sewing machines.
