Style and consumption of fabric for a sundress

Pattern of a sundress-robe-case pic1This simple pattern of a summer sundress-robe, sewn like a case cut off at the waist, is suitable only for slender women and girls.

The fact that the dressing gown is detachable will allow the tailor, if necessary, to choose the bodice and skirt from different sizes, changing the size of the soft folds when they are connected. This will allow you to sew a dressing gown for girls with a non-standard figure that combines two sizes.

The couturier can choose from two styles of the back of the bodice. A short back is for a more open sundress, and a high back is for a less open one.

The fabric consumption, taking into account the consumption for a wide belt and straps, will be 170 - 180 cm with a width of 140 - 150 cm.

From what to sew a sundress - a bathrobe

Pattern of a sundress-robe-case pic2Soft folds allow you to choose thin and soft fabrics for sewing.

Linen and cotton fabrics are ideal. For example, linen, chintz, cotton satin or thin denim.

Staple is less suitable - staple is better to use when sewing sundress with a Tatyanka skirt or sundress without fastening in front...

To prevent the bottom of the sundress from wrinkling, you can use soft regiline...

We sew a summer sundress with our own hands according to the finished pattern

Pattern of a sundress-robe-case pic3If here for this model everything is simple with the choice of size, then the choice of style variation and the choice of sewing technology can be quite difficult even for experienced home couturiers.

Consider in order the possible processing options, depending on the choice of style (Fig. 2).

A conditionally short back can be processed in two ways - into a hem with an open cut (Fig. 2a) or make the back double (Fig. 2b), using the second back as a lining.

It is desirable to process a high back with a facing (Fig. 2c), which can be cut out according to the pattern of the same name. We cut out, as usual, without allowances for seams from dublerin, in order to add allowances after gluing the blanks onto the fabric. At the same time, the width of the facing should be consistent with the width of the one-piece selection, as shown in the figure (Fig. 2d).

By the way, the bodice can also be double.

Seam allowances

Pattern sundress-robe-case photo1We add an allowance of 1 cm to most sections, the rest will require a separate story about their purpose.

An allowance of 3-4 cm should be added along the waist cut of the bodice details. This allowance is necessary for fitting and determining the exact length of the bodice in a cut-off product.

The upper cut of a short bodice for processing into a hem is equal to the width of the selection along the side seam (Fig. 2a and 2d).

On the cuts of the armholes, necks and waists of the skirt, allowances are not added. We do not add allowances to the detachable cuts of the facings and the selection.

To process the bottom of the skirt into the hem with a closed cut (double hem), add an allowance of 4 cm.

How to cut a dressing gown sundress: layout

Pattern sundress-robe-case photo2Cutting is not difficult (Fig. 3).

The fabric is folded in half face to face, the edges are aligned and parallel to the edge of the cutting table, as usual.

Patterns are laid in the most economical way, but with the obligatory observance of the share direction indicated on them.

As mentioned above, the belt and straps are strips of fabric.

Width calculation in cutting:

2 finished belt widths + 2 cm

2 strap widths in finished form + 2 cm

The recommended width of the straps in finished form is 3 cm, so the width in cutting will be 8 cm.

The length of the straps required for fitting varies between 50 - 70 cm. The length of the belt is according to the width of the fabric.

Burlap for convenience can be combined into one piece.

How to sew a sundress from scratch with your own hands

Sewing a dressing gown sundress essentially boils down to four stages:

  1. Assembling the bodice
  2. Assembling the skirt
  3. Fitting
  4. Connecting the bodice to the skirt

What you need to know about bodice assembly and fitting

The bodice can be processed both with soft warehouses and with tucks.

One-piece selection can be duplicated with doubler or interlining, or simply ironed along the line of the edge of the bead.

The selection in this model performs the function of turning the neck and armholes.

When preparing the product for fitting, you must make the straps, but the armholes and the neck can be left unprocessed in order to be able to change them as you wish. We carefully fasten the straps to the shelf.

On the fitting, we specify the position of the straps on the back. On a short back, they can cross.

Then, we specify the length of the bodice by tying the bodice on the figure with a linen elastic band.

After specifying the length of the bodice, the waist allowance may turn out to be of unequal width. For example, decrease in front due to a large chest or decrease in the back due to a stooped back.
