Clasp in a dress: where to place it and how to process it
In a sheath dress, which this dress is, the zipper is usually located at the back in the middle seam.
And, if the zipper is in the left side seam, you will need another fastener. This option seems not quite rational, but it will suit you if you want to make a decorative clasp in the form of a “drop” or “heart” at the back.
In addition to the “drop” and “heart”, there is another reason why it is worth making a fastener in the side seam ... But more on that later.
Now let's look at the most likely options for processing fasteners and necklines for this dress.
In any case, for processing, you will need a facing, which must be cut out according to the patterns of the shelves and back or along the bodice.
Of course, if you cut out the facing along the bodice, then the neck line should already be corrected during the fitting, the shoulder seams are processed, that is, stitched, swept over and ironed.
As you already know, the facings are cut out of doubler, folded in half, with an adhesive layer inside. First, the cut is outlined, which is being turned, then the cuts adjacent to it, and finally, the departure cut of the turning (figure 2a).
If you plan to sew a zipper to the middle seam at the back, then not only the usual facing is suitable for you, but also the facing, which can be processed in front of a decorative cut (figure 2d).
If you want to make a clasp in the form of a drop (figure 2b) or heart-shaped (figure 2c), then it is better to sew the zipper to the side seam.
So, we cut out facings from dublerin and in any case without seam allowances. Allowances will be added after the facings are glued to the fabric.
How to cut a vent in a dress with a skirt narrowed to the bottom
Now about one more indispensable element of a sheath dress with a skirt narrowed to the bottom - about a slot.
Before cutting, you should figure out what kind of slot will be.
The simplest slot is a counter stock with a cut. It looks symmetrical, and therefore spectacular, it is processed simply.
Why do you need to immediately decide with a slot? Because when cutting, you need to know what allowance for the slot to add.
Let's say we have a regular slot, similar to a one-sided warehouse. Then the allowance is 5 - 7 cm.
If we want an opposite warehouse - 11 - 13 cm (picture 3). The upper part of the allowance can be cut off later if the zipper is in the middle seam.
But, if the zipper is in the side seam, the allowance may not be cut off. In this case, the slot will not sag or deform. This is the very additional reason why the clasp should be in the side seam.
Allowances and layout of fabric for cutting the dress
The rest of the allowances are as follows:
- lateral, shoulder, relief and vertical sections of the sleeve - 1-1,5 cm;
- on the bottom of the dress - 2,5 - 3 cm;
- along the bottom of the bodice - 3 - 4 cm, in order to accurately determine the line of connection of the bodice with the skirt during the fitting;
- the sprout, neck, armhole, collar and bottom of the sleeve, as well as the cut of the waist of the skirt, are cut out beyond the line of the outline of the pattern, that is, without allowances.
Piping allowances are added after it is pasted onto the fabric. We add 1 cm at the seams of stitching and fasteners.
The layout is very simple. The fabric is folded in half face to face and, as usual, the aligned edges are parallel to the edge of the cutting table.
The cuff is a rectangle. Its dimensions with allowances will be 10 - 12 cm by 22 - 25 cm.
How to sew a detachable dress with a sleeve with your own hands
We start by collecting the bodice, skirt and sleeve (all separately) for fitting.
Trying on, we correct, if necessary, the line of the neck and armholes, we outline the line of sewing the bodice and skirt.
Preparing the dress for the second fitting, we finish processing the bodice and skirt, make cuffs and connect it to the sleeve. We sweep the sleeve and sweep the bodice with the skirt, sweep the bottom.
