Why do you need a double bodice when cutting this empire sundress
There are few options for processing armholes and necklines for such sundresses and dresses: edging, facing and a double bodice.
When should you choose edging?
This type of processing is suitable for a sundress made of fairly dense fabric and with a single bodice. In this case, the fabric should not be loose. The edging can be made both from the main fabric and from the companion fabric.
When should you choose wraps?
And why do you need to choose facings if they only complicate processing, make the bodice more dense and do not give a tangible economic effect?
This choice is not entirely justified, even if you are sewing a woolen or denim sundress and plan to wear it over a turtleneck or t-shirt. But even in this case, you can choose a double bodice on the lining fabric and, if necessary, duplicate the middle part of the bodice of the shelf.
When should you choose a double bodice?
For the vast majority of summer and warm sundresses. This processing greatly simplifies the process of cutting and sewing for beginners.
We will consider the latter option below.
How to cut this summer sundress with your own hands according to a pattern with a double bodice
Cutting for this model is quite simple (picture 2):
- The fabric is folded in half, face to face.
- Patterns are stacked taking into account the shared direction and allowances for seams.
- Seam allowances - 1 - 1,2 cm, with the exception of necklines and armholes - allowances are not added to them. We add 2,5 - 3 cm along the bottom of the skirt, and up to 4 cm along the bottom of the bodice. The last allowance is especially useful for girls and women with magnificent breasts - in some cases it would be desirable to lower the bottom line of the bodice.
- It is better to start laying out the patterns with the largest and most noticeable detail - from the skirt of the shelf.
- The lobar and fold of the tissue coincide with the midline of the folds.
- The lobar skirt of the back should not coincide with the middle seam.
"Upper" bodice
The back of the bodice - the share is perpendicular to the waist, at the middle part of the bodice shelf - along the half-skid, the side - the share is arbitrary, but should not coincide with the bottom of the barrel.
"Lower" bodice can be cut out without taking into account the share direction, but in this case, the bottom of the shelf should not coincide with the share thread.
How to sew a sundress with your own hands step by step
- Sweep the folds of the skirt and iron them. The mark must remain until the product is ready.
- We collect the top bodice for fitting.
- If you have made adjustments to the top bodice, then such changes should be made to the bottom bodice.
- To connect the upper and lower bodice, leave the shoulder seams and the middle back seam unstitched.
- Stitch necklines and armholes.
- Then the shoulder sections of the back are literally inserted “into the shoulders” of the shelf, while the back is turned on the face, and the shelf is turned inside out. But, if this seems complicated, the shoulder sections can be overcast and stitched in the usual way.
- After ironing the bodice and laying the fixing and / or finishing lines, a second fitting can be carried out.
- The skirt must be gathered completely except for the middle seam.
- After that, you should sweep the bodice and skirt and tack the zipper to the cuts of the middle seam.
- On the second fitting, you need to clarify the length of the bodice and the entire product.
- You can additionally adjust the volume of the sundress along the middle seam.
- After trying on, only the middle seam and bottom remain.
