Description of design and style variations

General drawing of a simple pattern of a straight dress sheath turtleneck with a sleeve and a double frontThe pattern is made on the basis of a turtleneck dress, but with a variation for sewing from slightly stretchy fabrics and for girls and women with large breasts.

The slanted tuck from the armhole makes it easy to fit the pattern to any size and shape of the bust, increasing or decreasing; shortening and lengthening, and if necessary, even turning the tuck.

Marking waist darts may or may not be useful, depending on the difference between the waist and hips, on desire and design.

The top shelf has a marking of the overlay line. The edge of the board is made in such a way that it is possible, if desired, to sew a dressing gown using only the top shelf.

The set of patterns includes two options for the sleeve - with a fit and a non-stop.

Sleeve with a fit is designed for fabrics with low stretch and for those who know how to try on and tuck in a sleeve.

In the configuration of large sizes, a sleeve option is provided for full hands with a tuck along the collar. A dart is made to reduce the fit without making the sleeve too narrow.

The stand-up collar imitates a turtleneck collar, but when sewing from stretch, you can cut the stand-up like a rectangle. The formulas for the dimensions of the rectangle rack are given below.

Now answers to frequently asked questions

Photo of a straight dress sheath-turtleneck with a sleeve and a double shelf according to the finished patternWhy do you need a middle seam? This question is asked all the time, although the answer is obvious - for a better fit of the product. And even in a turtleneck dress? Yes, and especially in a turtleneck dress without darts! In a turtleneck without darts, fitting the dress at the waist is possible only along the side seams and along the middle seam of the back - do not neglect it, especially if you have a large lumbar deflection and strongly protruding buttocks.

Zone growth correction - above the waist in the narrowest place and along the bottom of the product.

Please note that the corner of the protruding part of the upper shelf is located above the waistline. This is necessary so that the bottom edge of the buttons is not lower than the waist level. This position is important, especially if large decorative buttons are used.

From what to sew a sheath dress, and from what a turtleneck dress and how to calculate fabric consumption

For turtlenecks, we use stretch fabrics with medium stretch.

For the case - knitted stretch fabrics with low stretch or dress wool (not knitted wool). But for wool, you will probably have to make darts on the upper shelves as well.

In any case, the fabric should not be too loose or thick, as the double front and finished edges can make the seams very thick. You can check your choice by folding the fabric in four.

Too thin and highly stretchy fabrics are also not suitable, since it is difficult to process the bead in such fabrics.

The total consumption of fabric with a width of 140 - 150 will be 230 - 310 cm, depending on the size. For larger sizes, it is recommended to choose fabrics with a width of 150 cm, so as not to increase consumption.

Since the options for combining fabrics may be different, they are not considered. The final consumption should be calculated, having ready-made patterns with the final length of the product and sleeve.

For an approximate calculation of the consumption of combined variations of small sizes, we consider the formula

Shelf length + 10 cm.

To calculate the flow of large sizes -

Front length + sleeve length

Based on this consumption, we can cut out the back, shelf and rack with “white”, and the top shelf and sleeves with “black”. Or vice versa.

How to cut a straight turtleneck dress with a double shelf according to a simple ready-made pattern

How to cut a turtleneck dress with a double shelf pattern 2 according to the finished patternLet's start, as mentioned above, with growth correction. Let's check the length of the bodice, the length of the skirt and the overall length of the dress, as well as the length of the sleeve.

After completing the growth correction, we select the combination option - which parts will be “black” and which will be “white”. Then, we perform a preliminary layout and only after that we buy the fabric.

With bust tuck or without tuck? Now many girls with large breasts want to sew without darts and are surprised by the imbalance of the product and poor fit.

The main thesis is this: if there is a chest, then a tuck or fabric with great extensibility is also needed.

Larger sizes are strongly recommended to be cut with a chest tuck in any case.

As for the darts at the waist, here it is more a matter of taste.

Consider cutting a turtleneck dress with double shelves (picture 2).

The most convenient option is to cut everything from one fabric or with two upper shelves from a companion fabric.

Allowances for a turtleneck dress, which is planned to be sewn with a knitted seam on an overlock, are not needed. If necessary, we add only along the bottom - it will take 2,5 - 3 cm for the hem. Along the cut of the side for processing - 2 - 2,5 cm.

We fold the fabric in half face inward, lay out the patterns of the back and shelves with a “jack”, the top shelf is higher and cut out. Then, unfold the rest of the fabric and fold it across to cut out the sleeves.

Combined layouts look the same way - for small sizes, the sleeves will “pass” next to the back shelf and with the top shelf.

The stand, when cut from stretch, can be a transverse strip of fabric.

Stand length = Neck length + 2cm or Neck girth + 2cm

Stand Width = 2 Finished Widths + 2cm

How to cut a turtleneck dress with a double shelf pattern 3 according to the finished patternOn the 3 drawing the layout of the largest sizes of a sheath dress is shown, which is sewn from fabrics with low stretch.

Here is shown the cutting of the case, sewn not on the overlock, but in the “usual” way - each cut is overcast, and after the seams are sewn, the seams are ironed out.

The seam allowances here along the bottom are 2,5 - 3 cm, along the edge of the side 2 - 2,5, the middle seam of the back, side and shoulder, as well as the front and back seams of the sleeve - 1 - 1,2 cm. no seam allowances are added to the armholes and the hem. For the stand collar - 0,5 - 0,7 along the upper cut and 1 stitching incision.

As you can see, in the layout of large sizes, the sleeve “does not pass” even next to the top shelf. But, on the other hand, it is even easier to cut large sizes - we cut out everything in one step, except for the collar. The collar should be cut out when the shoulder seams are processed and the length of the neck is known.

How to sew a straight dress with double shelves at home

The sewing sequences for a turtleneck dress and sheath dress are almost the same, especially considering that a turtleneck can also have darts. Differences can only be in the processing of seams - stitching on an overlock or a narrow zigzag with ironing and subsequent overcasting of sections.

Since darts for the chest and darts at the waist can be present in any version of the dress, in any case we process them with a narrow zigzag - we sew from stretch.

  1. We grind and iron all the tucks.
  2. We grind the middle seam of the back, if necessary, we process the fastener or leave a fragment under it unstitched. We iron or iron.
  3. If the sides are not corrected, then we duplicate the allowances with a knitted doubler, we overcast, weave, iron and sew with a double needle or a decorative line of the side and the bottom of the upper shelves. We iron again. If they are corrected during the fitting, then we simply notice and lightly iron.
  4. We impose the upper shelves on the lower ones and chop off or sweep them along the shoulder and side seams.
  5. Stitch shoulder seams, iron. We note the side seam. If the sleeve is with a fit, then we grind the shoulder and side seams, overcast and iron. We sew the seam of the sleeve.
  6. The fitting is performed with a shoulder pad, if the pad is provided. We refine the lines of armholes and necklines. For a sleeve with a fit, we outline additional points for tucking in front and behind. You can immediately sweep the sleeve and try it on again. If it was planned, then the sides are also adjusted.
  7. It remains to finish the dress, in accordance with the measurements of the fittings. Lastly, stitching the collar.
