The complexity of sewing a coat with your own hands

NoteThe level of difficulty in sewing a coat with a one-piece sleeve and a one-piece collar depends on the fabric you choose and the processing option.

  1. Back pattern for women's one-piece coatFor beginners, a coat pattern, even with one-piece sleeves and a collar, is not suitable, since sewing a coat is always fraught with many difficulties. To simplify, it is recommended to sew a coat without pockets and without pick-ups from double-sided fabric, neoprene or artificial sheepskin coat, fur lining and other sandwich-type fabrics. But still, you should not start learning to cut and sew with this product.
  2. Home couturiers with sewing skills can try their hand at sewing a one-piece coat with pockets and hemlines, but without lining. This is the average level of difficulty.
  3. Professional tailors can make lined coats with pockets and hemlines, as well as more sophisticated fabrics such as tweed, rathin and boucle. However, they are aware of this.

Before buying a pattern, you should pay attention to the fact that this style is suitable for figures of any fullness and height, but with a wide shoulder girdle and relatively narrow hips. A one-piece coat is not suitable for girls and women with figures such as "guitar" or "pear".

Fabric consumption for a coat and what is in the pattern set

The consumption of fabric depends on the variant of the style, on the length of the sleeve, the size and the presence or absence of pick-ups.

Do-it-yourself shelf pattern for a one-piece women's coatFor sewing a coat with long sleeves and one-piece selections, you will need 280 - 330 cm with a width of 140 cm.

For coats with sleeves to the elbow or 3/4 - from 220 to 250 cm, with the same width.

For a more accurate calculation, lay out the patterns of the desired size. This must be done, of course, before buying fabric.

The set of coat patterns includes only patterns of the shelf and back (picture 1).

Features of a pattern of a one-piece women's coat with their own hands

Do-it-yourself coat pattern on lint-free fabricsWhen cutting the coat of this model, as in other cases, it is very important to observe the necessary allowances for the seams and the direction of the grain thread (figures 2, 3, 4 и 5).

Add 1 cm along the shoulder-sleeve and side-sleeve sections, while it is very important not to add more in the armpit bend of the sleeve-side seam. On the bottom of the coat - 3 - 4 cm, on the bottom of the sleeve - 2,5-3 cm for the hem.

We do not add a seam allowance along the upper cut of the one-piece collar, and along the middle seam of the back, the seam allowance will turn out to be uneven due to the fractional direction of the back, but 1–1,5 cm is enough for processing, so the excess can be cut off or left to process the slot .Pattern of a sheepskin coat or on fabrics made of faux fur

One-piece selection is not an allowance, but a continuation of the shelf. Its width is, as a rule, from 7 to 12 cm, including the edges, and due to the width of the selection, you can save a little.

If you are cutting a lint-free coat such as tweed or long sleeve boucle (picture 2), fold the fabric in half across and lay the details with a “jack”, observing the shared direction.

To cut a sheepskin coat or fabrics with faux fur on one side, the cut should not be folded in half, since you will have to cut out the details by bringing the scissors under the fabric, trying not to cut the pile (picture 3). It is important that on all details of the cut the pile is in the same direction, even if this direction is not pronounced.

Coat pattern with a sleeve to the elbow or 3/4To cut a coat with a sleeve to the elbow or 3/4 (picture 4), the fabric should be folded in half and the pattern bent, measuring equally in both sections, so that the sleeve is as long as possible. For small sizes, it will be longer than for large ones. Everything else is cut out as well. The cutting rule for lint-free and ragged fabrics remains unchanged - “jack” or sequential layout.

Now that we have figured out how to cut a coat with a one-piece stand and one-piece sleeve, let's move on to considering the nuances of cutting the facings necessary for processing a one-piece collar (picture 5).

The width of the facing details should not be narrower than the notch on the middle seam of the back and the edge of the front edge shows, but can be wider. We cut out the details according to the same patterns of the shelves and backs - we just cut off the fragments of the rack. Then, we draw a vertical line on the pattern of the shelf, which determines the width of the selection and cut the pattern.

Dubbing pattern for a women's one-piece coatAccording to the resulting fragments (picture 6) we cut out from dubbing the details of a one-piece collar and a one-piece selection without seam allowances, as well as a lining (picture 7) with the same seam allowances as the upper details.

A few words about dubbing (again picture 5).

Duplication of detail is present in whole or in part in all "top" products made of coat fabrics and can occur in products made of artificial or natural fur. For coats, as a rule, adhesive doublerin is used, for fur products - a bead without glue, but, as they say, "there may be options." Let's consider the most likely.

The one-piece pick and details for processing the inside of the one-piece rack are duplicated even in unlined coat fabrics. And in lined products, in addition to them, part of the back and part of the shelf are duplicated.

Pattern dubbing details for women's coatsThe back is duplicated to the level of the shoulder blades, the shelf is the shoulder, the tuck area and the middle part to the bottom.

Why are these fragments duplicated?

The shoulder area bears the heaviest load - the entire weight of the product and often the hands that we keep in our pockets. The middle part of the shelf from top to bottom should hold its shape well, the edge should not look crumpled or stretched. In addition, the overlap should overlap one end of the pocket so that it does not sag when worn.

Why not duplicate the entire shelf?

There is no gusset in this style, so you will have to diligently stretch it in the area of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbthe bend of the side-sleeve seam. If this area is duplicated, then it will be much more difficult to stretch it with an iron.

Three more important points.

  1. First: the dubbing of the shelf and the selection are two different parts that are glued at a distance of 0,5 cm, the gap is made along the line of the edge of the board.
  2. Second: doublerin should not fall under the tuck and on the hem of the bottom. Third: the bottom of the product and the bottom of the sleeve are duplicated with separate strips.
