Fabric consumption and recommendations for choosing it for a coat

Fabric consumption with a width of 150 cm will be from 140 to 150 cm, depending on the processing method and on the selected size.

The consumption of fabric with a width of 180 cm will be 130-140 cm, and with a width of 140 cm you will need about 180 cm to sew this coat.

Pattern of a coat shelf with a one-piece sleeve size 40 - 52The consumption of the lining fabric is equal to the consumption of the "top" fabric, but this coat can be sewn without lining.

For sewing this women's coat with a hood, it is advisable for beginners to choose easy-to-work fabrics, such as footer, fleece or dense thick jersey with low stretch.

A good solution would be knitwear with fur - such a coat is sewn without lining, but still requires some sewing experience from you. You can also use short faux fur on a soft knit basis as a lining.

If you have sufficient sewing experience, then the coat can be sewn from coat fabrics. Soft loose fabrics are suitable for this style. For example, tweed, boucle or cashmere.

There are no special requirements for lining fabrics, except for wear resistance and good glide.

The hoodie coat pattern set includes (picture 1):

  1. Back, hood and pocket patterns.
  2. Shelf with a one-piece sleeve.

The lining is cut out according to the same patterns as the "top". See below for cutting and sewing details.

Features of a coat pattern with a hood and a one-piece sleeve with your own hands

Do-it-yourself coat pattern on fabric 150 cm wide (fleece, coat fabrics)This very simple style of coat can be sewn even by a novice home fashion designer who has at his disposal a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch and a modern overlock.

The following describes a simplified cutting and sewing technology suitable for products from the most easy-to-process knitted fabrics (fleece, footer).

Cutting is performed without seam allowances, but in compliance with the shared direction.

On the 2 drawing cutting is shown on a fabric 150 cm wide (fleece, coat fabrics). The fabric is folded in half face to face, the edges are aligned and parallel to the edge of the cutting table. Parts are laid out in the most economical way.

Do-it-yourself coat pattern on fabric 180 cm wide (footer)Please note that the lobar back does not match the middle seam. The hood can be laid arbitrarily, but it is desirable that the cut that turns out to be near the face does not coincide with the share direction.

Do not forget to put notches on the cut details in the places where they are marked on the patterns - these marks will help you assemble the product correctly.

On the 3 drawing cutting is shown on fabric 180 cm wide (footer). It almost does not differ from the previous version.

But fabrics with a width of 140 cm (possible boucle width) will require a slightly different approach - picture 4.

In this case, the fabric is also folded in half, but across, otherwise you will have to shorten the sleeve.

How to sew step by step such a coat with a hood with your own hands for beginners

Sewing a hooded coat at home is a very difficult task, but if the sewing technology is extremely simplified, then you have a good chance of doing it with minimal cutting and sewing skills.

If the coat is planned to be lined, then it is easier to make it fly away and fasten it only to the neck and under the fastener, making it a little shorter than the “top”. But, if this is your first product, it is better to do without a lining at all.

So, we start tailoring a coat from scratch

We grind the middle seams of the back and hood, the shoulder and side seams of the coat with a knitted seam, having previously chipped the seams along the notches and at a few more arbitrary points with Potnov pins. To prevent stretching in the shoulder area, when sewing the shoulder seam, put an “edge” under it, you can literally use the edges of a thin knitted fabric or a special edge. You can also lay a narrow strip (1 - 1,5 cm) of dubbing from knitted dublerin under the shoulder seam.

After that, carefully iron all the stitched seams.

If a lining is provided, we also assemble the lining with a straight stitch and overcast the stitched sections.

How to connect a hood with a coat

Do-it-yourself coat pattern on fabric 140 cm wide (boucle)Now you can start connecting the hood to the coat.

First, we cut off the hood and coat along the middle seam, then, at the extreme points of the cord, we distribute the halves of the hood along the neck, cleaving it with pins.

Darts on the hood can be sewn or laid in the form of soft folds. And the second option is preferable.

Please note that it is desirable that the darts of the "top" are ironed to the middle seam, and the darts of the lining from it, in order to avoid overlapping. If you have chosen folds, then they should not overlap each other.

When the seams are chipped, you can sew in a hood with a narrow zigzag, put an edge under the seam or duplicate it with a narrow strip of knitted dublerin and overcast it on an overlock.

When assembling the lining, do not forget about the loop so that the coat can be hung on a hanger.

If the coat is lined, then it is not necessary to overcast the seam for sewing in the hood. And, having stitched the hood onto the lining, turn both the hood and the sides with the lining. This is the easiest way, although it would be more correct to sew a zipper before that.

But why is it better to have a lining first, and then a zipper? Firstly, it will be easier to replace it, and secondly, it will be easier to finish the coat by overcasting the bottom with the same knitted seam or edging it with an oblique trim.

But there is another nuance: your lining is detachable, it should be connected to the “top” along the seam of the hood and try on the coat. On the fitting, the lining is shorter by 2 - 3 cm than the "top", then process the bottom of the "top" and the lining on the overlock (this is the easiest way, but experienced tailors can choose something more difficult).

And at the end coat tailoring, connect the lining with the coat along the bottom of the seams. If you have chosen the easiest sewing method, then all you have to do is sew on a zipper.
