Features of do-it-yourself patterns of dresses for turtleneck cases of this style

How to sew an elegant floor-length dress at home inexpensively - let's try to figure out the details.

Do-it-yourself pattern of a long floor-length sheath dress for small sizesOf course, learning how to sew clothes from scratch at home is not as easy as many people now say. But still, a stretch case is a simple style, for sewing which you will need only minimal skills in cutting and sewing, and from sewing equipment, an overlock and / or a machine with a zigzag stitch.

Consider first the patterns themselves (picture 1) that come with the kit.

Before cutting, do not forget to compare the length of the product and the length of the sleeve with the desired one, so as not to waste more fabric than necessary.

When determining the length of the product, one should also take into account the coefficient of arbitrary extensibility of the stretch - that is, how much the fabric can stretch under its own weight.

How to calculate approximate coefficient of arbitrary stretch (see point 8 in this article).

Do-it-yourself pattern of a long floor-length sheath dress for medium sizesIf the pattern is longer than you need, then remove the length should be above the knee line. Just put the excess in the warehouse and pin it off.

Having decided on the length of the product, consider the technology of cutting and sewing. Typically, such dresses are sewn on an overlock with a knitted seam, and the bottom is processed with a sewing machine or a double needle into a hem with an open cut (single hem), or even just a rolled seam (a seam with a rudder).

If you will make a hem, then you will need an allowance for the bottom up to 2,5 - 3 cm.

Having decided on the processing, you can proceed to cutting (figures 2 и 3).

For small sizespicture 2) the fabric is folded in half facing inward, the edges are parallel to each other and to the edge of the cutting table.

The back and front patterns are laid in the most economical way, that is, “jack”, and the sleeves are cut out at the second stage of cutting from the remaining strip of fabric, which can be folded across.

When cutting, pay attention to the direction of the lobar thread of the back - the lobar thread should be parallel to the midline and, therefore, perpendicular to the horizontal lines of the waist and bottom.

When sewing a dress on an overlock or zigzag with a seam width of not more than 0,5 - 0,7 cm, you do not need to add seam allowances.

Medium size cutting is shown in 3 drawing. The fabric is folded in half facing inward, the edges are aligned and parallel to the edge of the cutting table.

If you are cutting a dress from stretch velvet, then the pile on all the details of the cut should be located in one direction - up.

Why should the pile when cutting a dress be located up?

If you place the pile down, then the dress will rise a lot when outerwear is put on it.

There is only one question left: is it worth cutting out the neckline right away or just marking it on the pattern and cutting it out on the fitting?

If you are just learning to cut and sew and you don’t have much experience with stretch, then it’s better to cut out the whole back and mark the cutout according to the pattern on the details of the cut.

Please note that the neckline is higher than the waist. Depending on the properties of the fabric and on the method of processing the neckline you have chosen, the neckline may deepen by itself by several centimeters.

How to sew a turtleneck sheath dress step by step using this pattern

The sewing sequence is also very simple, but it is worth paying attention to some sewing nuances so that you can avoid typical mistakes of beginner couturiers.

The zipper in this product plays only a decorative role.

The main requirement for a zipper is that it should not be too heavy and massive in relation to the fabric. Otherwise, it will only pull the dress with its own weight. In other words, when sewing a dress with a "tractor" zipper, choose tight stretch.

Another mistake related to lightning, which can only be solved before cutting the product. Please note that the zipper is shorter than the desired length of the dress by the amount of hem at the bottom. If the zipper is longer, then the back will turn out to be wavy.

Now that you have been warned, you can proceed to sewing the dress:

  1. We start sewing by processing the middle seam of the back - we grind it with a knitted seam on an overlock and iron or sew a zipper with a regular straight line.
  2. Then we grind the side, shoulder seams and the seam of the sleeve, also on the overlock.
  3. Under the shoulder seams, we put a stretch edge or a strip of knitted dublerin under the seam.
  4. Be sure to carefully iron the stitched seams.
  5. We try on, look at how the marking of the neckline has fallen, we specify the degree of fit of the dress.
  6. We attach the sleeve.
  7. Next, we knit the sleeve and process the neckline and neckline.
  8. The simplest processing method is discussed here - photo 2, fig. 3 by link
  9. The important point is that the "inlay" should be slightly stretched so that it, while remaining elastic, does not allow the neckline to stretch too much.
  10. See also which seams are suitable for sewing products from stretch
  11. At the end - the bottom of the dress and sleeves.
  12. Remember that the bottom can simply be overcast with a knitted seam on an overlock.
