2. What patterns are included in the sets of patterns and a description of the style
2.1 Complete set of sarafan-vyshyvanka patterns
- Back pattern.
- Shelf pattern.
- Sleeve pattern.
- Patterns of wedges - "big" and "small".
- Pocket burlap pattern.
Strips of fabric and/or bias tape may also be needed for processing.
2.2. Description of the design of the style of the sundress-vyshyvanka
The model was developed on the basis of the sapozhkov cut, traditional for Ukrainian national women's clothing.
Such wedges in the side seams can also be considered traditional, although their appearance is due only to the small width of the fabric, which was made at home.
3. What to sew a sarafan-vyshyvanka from and fabric consumption
If you stick to tradition, you should use natural linen or hemp fabrics, as well as nettle fabrics.
When choosing, special attention should be paid to mixed fabrics: linen-nettle, linen-cotton, linen-viscose. Of the rare ones, lyocell (a fabric made from eucalyptus fibers) can be noted.
If you want to move away from the ethnic tradition with sewing an ordinary summer sundress, then staples, chintz, muslin, cambric, and silk are perfect for this task.
When choosing a fabric, special attention should be paid to shirt cotton and staple.
Consumption with a width of 150 cm will be from 190 to 300 cm. How to reduce consumption when cutting large sizes up to 230 cm, see below.

5. How to cut a sundress-vyshyvanka according to the finished pattern with your own hands
We start by laying out and marking the locations of the embroidery on the fabric.
Please note that in many cases, embroidery is marked first, then the embroidery itself, then washing, ironing, and only then cutting.
Cutting is not difficult. Possible layout options are shown in the figures. 2 и 3.
5.1. Let's focus on the seam allowances
The middle seam of the back, side, sleeve - 1 cm each.
Armholes and raglan WITHOUT allowances. Without allowances, oblique cuts of the wedge and burlap.
On the bottom 2,5 - 3 cm.
Top cut allowances may vary. In this example, 3 cm allowances were used to process the drawstring.
5.2. It is also worth talking about saving fabric.
Consider picture 2.
It shows a small size layout with a narrow wedge. There are a lot of attacks, but not critical.
But in the layout of large sizes (picture 3) will require some ingenuity to reduce the consumption from 300 to 230 cm.
Consider picture 3 more attentively.
We lay the shelf with a semi-skid (middle line) towards the edges with an indent of 7 - 8 cm. Later, you can hem this allowance with a closed cut (double hem) and get processed sides. Please note that the edge of the finished side at the same time should protrude beyond the half-drift line by 1,5 - 2 cm.
We lay the wedge pattern with the middle line on the fold of the fabric twice.
As you can see, the sleeve does not run across the width, so its fragment from the side of the back cut is cut out separately. And, if a large fragment of the sleeve was left without a seam allowance, then a small fragment should contain a double allowance - 2 cm.
Straps. If they are cut out from the same fabric as the sundress, then the length will be about 45 cm. It is better to make a clarification at the fitting. Width - 4 - 6 cm. The share thread should run along the straps, otherwise it will stretch and the thread will break.
After cutting, it is worth applying control notches of the waist-hips on the side seams and on the middle seam of the back, as well as the middle lines on the wedges and mark the half-skid.
Notches for making pockets can be applied immediately after cutting, but it is better before these pockets are made.
6. How to sew a do-it-yourself embroidered sundress at home
Let's start with the fact that when sewing an embroidered sundress, it is advisable to use linen (stitching seam)
But for processing heavy flax, it is better to edge the sections. The edging of the cuts is also preferable if the top cut there is a heavy embroidered border (photo 4 link).
If you are using a trim for the top or other cuts, it is best to make it before you start sewing. Watch how to make a slanting inlay - video master class
The sewing sequence is as follows:
- If boards are provided, then process the boards.
- The middle seam of the back, side back with a wedge, sleeve seams - with a sewing seam or edging, stitching, ironing.
- Run pocket notches - down from the waist by 7 - 10 cm. Stitch the burlap and process the side seam. This seam is more convenient to edging or overcasting.
- Bottom - in a hem with a closed cut (double hem) or in a hem with an open cut (overcast and fold).
- The drawstring can be processed simply into a hem, but a slightly more complex approach can also be used.
Watch the video master class on sewing a sapozhkov dress - The processed straps are attached from the side of the shelf and their final length is determined during the fitting. The tension of the elastic band or lace in the drawstring should also be determined during the fitting.
