3.1. What to sew and how to calculate fabric consumption

A variant of a sewn sundress according to this summer boho patternBoho style is traditionally associated with soft natural fabrics made of cotton or linen.

Staple and cambric can be considered the most suitable. Various types of gauze and "reaper" made of natural fibers are suitable.

Lace fabric is also a good solution. Lace and cambric stitching will be a good finish to the product.

Of course, the most delicate should be chosen from linen fabrics.

Consumption with a width of 140 - 150 cm will be from 150 to 230 cm.

Bias inlay consumption from 200 cm to 900 cm.

4. How to cut a women's sundress according to a simple ready-made pattern

On fig. 2 shows the cutting of a sundress with a "straight" bottom and a long "narrow" sleeveThe most important thing is to choose a variation of the style - with or without assembly and a bottom with a flat or with a drop, as well as the length and splendor of the sleeve and the option of its upper cut.

Seam allowances are not needed - the allowance will replace the next digit of the size.

The length, of course, is worth checking, but it is quite difficult to accurately determine it before cutting, since the length of the product will be regulated by the length of the straps.

Cutting itself is not difficult:

On the 2 drawing shows the cutting of a sundress with a "straight" bottom and a long "narrow" sleeve. In this case, the fabric is folded in half along the width of the backrest.

On the 3 drawing shows the cutting of a large sundress with assembly along the upper cut of the shelf and sleeve.

After cutting, fold the parts, aligning all four side cuts and mark the position of the pocket with a notch, stepping back from the waist 5-7 cm.

Figure 3 shows the cutting of a large sundress with assembly along the upper cut of the shelf and sleeveThen, placing the burlap over the side seams that are still folded together, make a second notch.

Notch length 0,5 cm.

In addition, you will need a notch along the middle seam of the back at the waist, as well as notches that determine the semi-skid (the middle line of the shelf) - along the upper and lower sections.

Cutting the inlay is not difficult - several strips 4-5 cm wide are cut out of the remnants along the oblique thread, depending on the fabric and the desired width of the inlay in finished form. This is in view of the fact that the inlay will stretch and deform when stretched.

The question arises: to make an inlay, or to buy it? Let's consider the arguments.

  1. The homemade inlay on the straps will be exactly the same as the sundress.
  2. When making the trim yourself, on the straps you can make it a little wider than for edging the armholes and side cuts.
  3. The inlay "shop" is made of synthetic fabrics, they are stiffer and thicker - this can serve as an argument both for and against. For example, stiffer seams will help keep the piece in shape, at least partially.

5. How to sew a boho sundress for summer step by step

First of all, you need to make an inlay - grind the fragments, iron the stitching seams and iron it on the device. The device can be either purchased or cut out of cardboard.

See video how to make a slanting trim for edging slices and for finishing, if finishing is needed

How to use a home sewing machine binder (in the second minute of the video).

Please note that you should learn how to work with the binder before you start sewing the product. This will take about half an hour. It is also necessary to tune in to a specific product on trial patches of the same fabric.

It is also important to take into account the fact that the inlay will stretch in the sock and therefore it should be slightly pulled in the area of the berets or elastic seams such as a zigzag should be used when sewing. If this is not done, the lines on the straps can burst quite quickly.

It is also worth considering replacing the overlock by edging the cuts with an oblique trim, as it is most suitable for thin fabrics and lace.

We are also considering use of a suture, as the most suitable for sewing products from thin natural fabrics.

After all the preparatory work and reflections, you can start sewing a boho sundress.

The sewing sequence is approximately the following:

  1. Stitch pocket burlap to side seam. We grind, focusing on the notches. The stitched sections of the seams are overcast or edged and ironed.
  2. We grind and weave or overcast the side seams, then we iron them towards the shelf.
  3. The burlap of the pocket can be fixed on the shelf with a stitch or bartacks.
  4. If assembly is provided, assemble with two lines and distribute the assembly so that it is maximum in the middle of the parts and disappears towards the cuts.
  5. Stitch the sleeve seam with a backstitch and iron it.
  6. Sew the sleeve into the armhole, distributing it evenly and NOT COMBINING the sleeve seam with the side seam.
  7. Then, you should turn over the upper cut of the sleeve and back.
  8. The top edge of the shelf. We start edging with the manufacture of straps - we grind the inlay through the fixture by 30 - 40 cm in order to have a margin, and proceed to edging the upper cut of the shelf. Then again - a strap.
  9. The middle seam can be swept away for fitting or processed immediately with a sewing seam, slightly stretching it.
  10. On the fitting, we determine the length of the straps and, if the middle seam is still swept, then you can adjust the volume of the product.
  11. It remains only to fasten the straps and process the bottom into a hem with a closed cut (double hem) or with an open cut (edge or overcast and fold once).
