3. What to sew a coat from, how to download and print patterns

3.1. What to sew a simple coat, jacket or fur coat from and how much fabric is consumed

For sewing this model, both soft coat fabric (boucle, loden) and any fur are suitable, but these options will require professional cutting and sewing skills.

Double-sided coat fabrics are a little easier to process.

But a home couturier with little experience in cutting and sewing recommends the following options:

1. Ready-made quilted raincoat fabric or knitted fabric with a stitch effect. Beginners should focus on double-sided quilted fabrics.
2. A footer with a "felt" or fur wrong side is also well suited. "Fur" footer can be sewn with fur out. The footer is especially simple, the fur of which does not have a pile direction.

The consumption of fabric with a width of 140 cm will be from 260 to 320 cm.

Consumption of a footer with a width of 180 cm - from 200 cm to 250 cm.

In any case, the expense must be calculated, having ready-made patterns on hand and knowing the width of the fabric. To do this, perform a preliminary layout on any cut of a suitable width or by laying two centimeter tapes in parallel (ropes, rulers, etc.)

4. How to cut a jacket or coat according to a simple ready-made pattern

To begin with, as usual, we choose the cutting option, having previously checked the length of the sleeve according to the pattern (from the side point of the neck to the base of the little finger or through the bent elbow).

Unfortunately, "convenient" and at the same time economical cutting of this model will not work. Either convenient or economical.

The following shows some simple cutting options for this model, designed for a simple level of sewing.

Option one (picture 2) suitable for small sizes. The fabric is folded across. The pick-up unites with a shelf in one detail. We make the hood double, it’s good if all sections of the upper hood are “oblique”. The back is obtained with an average seam, therefore, we avoid longitudinal direction along the middle seam of the back, so that the seam does not seem to be pulled together.

For medium and large sizes, we cut out the selection as a separate part (picture 3) and cut the selection pattern to save fabric. In this case, the tissue is also folded in half across the lobar.

You can also cut a sleeve with a cuff (picture 4). This will allow you to fold the fabric in the usual way - along the longitudinal thread so that the fold is parallel to the edges. The cuffs can be rectangular to lengthen the sleeve as much as you need, or you can fold the cut pieces of the sleeve end-to-end along the shoulder cut into one cuff pattern.

Details of the “leaflet” pocket can be cut out both along the lobar and along the transverse thread. But novice couturiers, who usually choose a pocket in the side seam, should take into account that in this model the pocket in the side seam will be inconveniently located.

Burlap can be cut from the lining fabric or from the "pocket".

For a pocket in the side seam, when cutting out the burlap from the lining, you will need a valance detail (a strip 4 cm long longer than the entrance to the pocket and 5-6 cm wide), which will need to be overcast and sewn onto one of the burlap parts before processing the pocket.

For leaflets both the detail of the leaflet and the detail of the valance are needed (the exception is the tuning leaflet).

As for the seam allowances, 1 cm will be enough, and at the bottom of the coat - no more than 2 cm.

At the end of the cutting, while the parts are in pairs, we perform the notches indicated in the drawings.

About cutting coats.

For beginners, cutting a fur coat will be quite difficult, but you can sew a jacket from a footer on fur that does not have a shared direction. Such a product can be sewn with fur inside or fur outside.

When cutting a faux fur coat, remember that the direction of the pile for all parts should be the same - up.
