3. What to sew and how to calculate the consumption of fabric for sewing a dress

This is a very democratic style in terms of the choice of fabric - an asymmetric trapezoid dress with a frill can be sewn from anything! BUT…

Attention! The choice of fabrics for this model will require a lot of experience and professionalism from the couturier.

In the photo you see a model made of wool tweed and wool tartan. Usually, this fabric is used for sewing jackets and skirts, sometimes for trousers. Please note that sewing a tweed dress increases the complexity of sewing.

A sleeveless tweed dress can be worn with a turtleneck, as a sundress or with long gloves.

When choosing heavy warm fabrics, it is important to understand that the weight of the frill can upset the balance of the product, so the weight of the frill should not exceed the weight of the dress, the frill should not deform the dress with its weight.

In other words, the fabric for the dress must be sufficiently dense and stable, that is, it must not stretch. And the fabric for the shuttlecock should be easy.

The combination will be successful if the dress is made of dense fabric, and the frill is made of light. It is unfortunate if the fabric on the dress is chosen from fabrics that are easily deformed, and the frill turns out to be dense and heavy.

With summer dresses, everything is somewhat simpler.

A summer dress can be made from linen or silk, denim, thick stretch, chintz, poplin, cotton satin, etc.

The dress can be both combined and made of one fabric.

The consumption for a dress with a long sleeve and without a frill will be from 130 to 280 cm. This is with a fabric width of 150 cm.

The cost per shuttlecock "strip", which is cut across the cut, will be 40-80 cm with a width of 140-150 cm. 4. How to cut an asymmetric summer dress with a frill according to the finished pattern

Cutting, like any other asymmetric model, is done on the fabric in a turn (Fig. 2, 3), that is, DO NOT fold the fabric in half. We cut, spreading the fabric in one layer.

To avoid annoying misunderstandings and not to turn over asymmetric details, we lay out the patterns on the “face” of the fabric, all asymmetrical - with the inscriptions up.

We start, as usual, by checking the length and thinking through the variations of the style.

Seam allowances are standard - 1 cm, except for the armhole, neckline and rim.

We DO NOT add seam allowances to the cuts of the armhole, neck and okat.

On the bottom of the sleeves and dresses - 2,5 - 3 cm or do not add, it depends on the calculations of the length.

Cut out the shuttlecock after the shelves and backs. Before we open it, we fold the fabric in half, since the shuttlecocks are symmetrical. We compare the length of the cut of the shuttlecock stitching with the cut to which the shuttlecock will be stitched. We use correction lines so that the lengths of the slices match.

We cut out the facings for the neck according to the patterns of the shelves and backs, but it is better to do this after the first fitting on the product.

Let me remind you that we cut out the blanks of the facings of the neck and the armholes from doubler without allowances, then we glue the blanks of the facings on the remnants of the fabric and cut them out with allowances. As you can see, this is best done when the neckline and armholes have already been adjusted for the fitting.

We can cut a strip, both lengthwise and across. Additional stitches, if the flounce-strip consists of parts, it is better to do it closer to the middle part of the flounce and with the exact alignment of the pattern.

5. How to sew a summer dress at home - sequence

1. We start by assembling the dress for fitting: tucks, middle back seam with a long zipper, shoulder, side, sleeve assembly. We also take the shuttlecock in order to correctly assess the balance. For basting we use a machine basting line or you can baste by hand. Sweep, slightly iron.
2. At the first fitting, we check the fit of the dress: balance; tuck for the chest; we cut the neck and armhole, based on the features of the figure and our own vision of the style; try on the sleeve.
3. We process the dress up to the frill, including the facing of the neck, we process the sleeve or armholes with facings.
4. We sweep the sleeve, we sweep the shuttlecock, distributing it evenly. In other words, the midline of the flounce does NOT line up with the bottom of the left side seam.
5. Second fitting: sleeve fit, length.
6. We process the bottom. Finishing ironing.
