top fabric, dublerin and lining.
Speaking of "coat" fabric, we mean a rather dense and thick fabric "from which you can sew a coat with your own hands" and often do not suspect the diversity of the assortment.

Let's try to figure it out and start with familiar words: drape and semi-drape.
Drape for sewing a coat
Drap (drap) is a French word that translates as cloth. What we need to know about cloth is that it is a dense and heavy fabric made from machine-spun yarn. The cloth has a pronounced "face" and the wrong side, while the front side can be made from higher quality raw materials than the wrong side.
Today, the last squeak is a double-faced cloth, in which the sides of the “face” and “second face” are of different colors. This cloth is ideal for sewing coats with raw sides, as the cloth does not fray.

Pattern for beginners coat with scarf An easy coat for beginners to sew with a pattern in sizes 40-52 and 52-64. It is necessary to use dense knitted fabrics. Fleece can be used economically. When sewing, you will need an overlocker. |
And yet, with the seeming simplicity of these models, for sewing outerwear, even without lining, fasteners and bead processing, you need to have some sewing experience. Therefore, if you are just starting to sew, then it is better for beginners to choose a fabric that is cheaper and easier to process. For example, footer or fleece - open sections can be overcast on an overlock with contrasting threads or overcast by hand using knitting yarn. Such processing is now in vogue.
By the way, it is necessary to distinguish cloth from cloth fabrics. In short, the felt looks like felt, as it goes through the felting operation in a felting machine. Cloth fabrics include fabrics that undergo some other final processing, except for felting. For example, beaver fabric has a trimmed pile, ratin is pressed in a special way (with waves or another pattern).
Modern fabrics are quite different from the fabrics of our mothers and grandmothers. Today you will not find pure wool fabrics and many of the names are unfamiliar to the general public. Usually, thicker fabrics are simply called drape, and thinner ones are semi-drape.
Of the women's coat fabrics, boucle is especially popular, and tweed is used for both men's and women's clothing. Both boucle and tweed have several varieties.
When buying "cashmere", do not expect that this fabric will have more than 10% cashmere goat hair. Most likely, it will be a rather soft drape or semi-drapen
Often the seller comes up with his own names, such as "Alex", "Venice", "Mohair" and it is useless to argue. I like it better when they simply sign “coat fabric” and write the composition - so much wool, and so much synthetics. But such honesty is the exception rather than the rule.

Doublerin for coats
For a coat, dublerin of medium density and stiffness is suitable. The weave is linen (the simplest), the glue is applied on one side.
Dubbing made of bandeau material (shabrak) is not suitable for a coat - it is too hard and is used for sewing hard lambrequins and other hard curtain details. Stretch dublerin is also not suitable - it should be used when sewing products from knitted fabrics. Non-woven - also not good.

It is quite difficult to find a really good lining for a coat. Of course, they are all made of polyester, but buying a fabric called "lining" is not worth it. Usually, the “lining” fabric is too thin, it does not hide the seams, it is electrified and sticky, making it difficult for the product to slide.
For a coat, dense satin or dense twill is more suitable. You can also use taffeta. Naturalness is optional. And natural silk lining fabrics are best used for a light dress. Yes, some dresses are best done with a lining.
Here is such a very short digression into the world of fabrics, which will help beginners in learning to cut and sew.
