A mask - a scarf, a mask - a scarf has two functions - decorative and protective.
It can be worn as a scarf and as a mask, removing and putting on the protruding part (see the photo).
The mask can be double or single, sewn from a scarf or thin fabric.
2. From what to sew a mask - a scarf and how much fabric is consumed
You can sew from any thin fabric. Of course, it is better to choose natural materials. For example, silk, staple, cambric. Suitable f / w gauze, and thin linen, and thin cooler (cooler cloth, which is used for sewing T-shirts).
The consumption will be 80 - 85 cm, depending on whether you fold the fabric along or across when cutting.
The handkerchief mask option will require a handkerchief measuring at least 70 x 70 or 100 x 100 cm. In figure 3 shows the layout of the pattern on a scarf with a side of 70 cm.
From a small scarf with a side of 55 cm, you can sew a single-layer mask using the “Wrong side” pattern.
How to print and how to choose size:
For self-printing of a free full-size pattern, use our instructions.
To choose a size, compare the dimensions of the pattern with existing products of the same type. But for this model of a mask - a scarf, the size does not matter much, as it is regulated by ties and / or behind-the-ear loops made of thin linen elastic. More about choosing the size any other pattern
3. How to cut and sew a protective mask - a scarf
First you need to decide whether your mask will be single-layer or two-layer.
3.1. Open the masks
We cut a single-layer mask using only part of the pattern - “Front” (with two folds on the sides) or “Wrong side” (without folds).
To cut from fabric, fold the fabric in half along the width of the pattern and lay the pattern on the fold (picture 2). Please note that the fabric fold can run either parallel to the edges or perpendicular to them.
You can also cut a mask - a scarf and on an oblique, folding the fabric in half along an oblique thread, like a scarf (picture 3).
When cutting a double mask from a scarf, pay attention only to the pattern in the "front" of the mask. The “wrong side” is cut according to the residual principle.
Seam allowances may not be added.
After cutting, apply a mark along the line that is signed “from the bridge of the nose to the temple”, make notches at the places where the ties are attached. Notch length - 0,5 cm.
3.2. To sew a mask - a scarf:
- Lay and cover the folds.
- Fold along the line, which is signed as "from the bridge of the nose to the temple." The fold is needed face inward and wrong side out.
- Place the ties (elastic bands) in “tie point 1” and stitch the concave seam, leaving a gap of 1 cm in “tie point 2”.
- Stitch the middle seams. It is better to grind them with a double seam. Press or iron these seams.
- Cut the concave seam (where the ties are attached) in several places and turn the mask inside out. The turning seam should be swept and ironed.
- Now you can try on the mask and specify the length of the tie (ear loop made of elastic).
- In the second hole, insert the elastic band of the tie (with an elastic ear loop) and fasten it by machine or by hand.
- Work the bottom with any edge seam.
