3. What to sew a sundress from, fabric consumption and how to buy a pattern

3.1 From what to sew a sundress on a turtleneck or on a blouse

Photo of a sundress model for a blouse or t-shirt according to a patternBoth warm and summer fabrics are suitable for sewing.

For cold seasons, you can use thin drape, tweed, loden, boucle, dress wool and wool tartan.

For summer, denim, velveteen and “heavy” linen are suitable.

Fabric consumption with a width of 140 cm will be from 230 to 270 cm.

At the same time, the bodice in whole or in part, as well as the burlap-turning and the lower part of the straps can be cut out of the lining fabric.

Cutting the wrong parts of the bodice from the lining fabric is best used when sewing from thick and loose woolen fabrics such as drape or boucle. The flow rate is

one bodice length + 5 cm

Look at the length of the bodice by size.

Of course, if several details are cut out of the lining fabric, the consumption of the “top” fabric should be recalculated by performing a preliminary layout of the finished patterns.

4. How to cut a sundress for a blouse in large and small sizes using ready-made patterns

Layout on fabric patterns according to the pattern of a sundress of small sizesAs mentioned above, the selection in the lower part is one-piece.

This is done to save processing time and improve quality. The one-piece part of the selection can be narrowed to save fabric or completely copy the middle of the shelf so that the middle is double to the relief line.

  1. The first option is recommended for thick and loose fabrics, but it is worth narrowing a one-piece selection to a width of at least 7–8 cm. The narrowing line can be either vertical or curved.
  2. The second option is only suitable for thin fabrics.

Before cutting, it is also important to decide whether companion fabrics or lining fabrics will be used and, if the fabric has not yet been purchased, check the consumption.

Seam allowances - most 1 cm. Only add 2,5 - 3 cm along the bottom.

The layout for small sizes is shown in 2 drawing, and for large size patterns - on 3 drawing.

When cutting, the straps can be cut double, putting the pattern to the fold of the fabric.

Layout according to the fabric of the patterns according to the pattern of a sundress of large sizesXX The fractional direction of the side wedges and lower details of the bodice can be changed by a couple of degrees, if this will help save fabric.

Another important point regarding the cutting of the PP side wedge and pocket.

The PP side wedge template can be cut along the pocket entry line and glued after cutting. The seam allowances do not change at the same time 0,7 - 1 cm. A whole pattern will be needed after the pocket has been processed in order to compare the workpiece and the pattern.

But it is possible to cut out the entire side wedge of the PP, as in fig. 2 - 3 and cut off the “extra fragment” before processing the pocket.

After cutting, do not forget about notches at the waist for the middle details of the sundress.

On the side wedges of the skirt you will see folds, which, after cutting, should also be marked with notches.

Notches are needed along the bottom of the middle part of the shelf - along the half-skid and the edge of the side, and besides this, a notch will be required in the corner between the edge of the side and the waist (see picture 1).

Do not forget about the marking of the half-skid, the edge of the board and the line of entry into the pocket.

5. How to sew a sundress on a blouse or T-shirt at home

DIY sewing sequence:

  1. We start with processing the pocket: grind the side wedge of the PP at the entrance to the pocket with burlap-turning, make notches on the allowance, fasten the cut allowances with a line, iron and fasten again; put burlap and perform bartacks; stitch and overcast burlap; iron and compare with the pattern.
  2. Treat soft folds - sweep and iron like tucks.
  3. Iron the one-piece part of the pick. Gather and carefully iron the “top” of the sundress except for the middle seam of the back. Sweep the middle seam of the back.
  4. Overstitch the straps and tack them to the shoulder seams of the shelf.
  5. Try on, adjusting if necessary along the middle seam of the back and along the shoulder seams.
  6. Finish the middle seam of the back.
  7. After the correction, make changes to the details of the lower bodice and assemble the lower bodice.
  8. Process the top of the bodice and the edge of the side, leaving the shoulder seams unprocessed.
  9. Turn the shelves inside out and put the straps between the top and lining bodice, stitch and iron the seams.
  10. Process the bottom into an open hem - overcast and fold once.
  11. Loops, buttons and finishing ironing.
