How to cut a top for summer

Before cutting, you should choose the method of processing the neck and armholes - turning or edging.

Bias binding is suitable for all fabrics, but binding for thicker fabrics should be made from a different, thinner material.

Bias binding can be done in a variety of ways.

To process the neck and armholes with facings, it is necessary to cut out facings from dublerin (Fig. 2) according to the same patterns as the front and back. We cut out the facing blanks without seam allowances. After gluing the blanks to the fabric, you can add the necessary allowances at the junction of the facing fragments.

The width of the facings at the narrowest point is 4 - 5 cm.

Please note that turning should not be used to process very thin fabrics, such as chiffon or cambric.

Topic cutting options

Let's take a closer look at the various options.

On fig. 3 shows the cutting of the flare top with middle seam on the back. Left is small, right is medium.

The fabric is folded in half face to face, the edges are aligned. Patterns are laid out in the most economical way.

At the seams, add 1 cm to the side and shoulder seams. No allowances are added to the neck, sprout and armhole. Bottom - optional.

If you want to sew a top without a middle seam along the back, there will be two cutting options (Fig. 4):

1. wasteful (on the left in Figure 4)
2. and economical (on the right in Figure 4).

For the wasteful option, the fabric is folded in half along the width of the layout (Fig. 4 on the left), the edges are parallel.

For an economical option, cutting is carried out in two stages (Fig. 4 on the right).

First, the fabric is folded in half along the width of the shelf pattern, the edges are parallel - the shelf is laid on the fold and cut out with seam allowances.

Then, the fabric is folded in half from the side of the other edge along the width of the back pattern, the edges are parallel - the back is laid as economically as possible with a “jack” to the cut-out shelf and cut out with seam allowances.

Lastly, the facings are cut out, but attention should be paid to the fact that the blanks of the facings must first be glued to the fabric, and then cut out with allowances for the seams.

How to sew a summer top with your own hands step by step

1. Sewing a flyaway top is very simple, but the sewing sequence for processing the neckline and armholes with bias tape and facing is different.
2. Let's start with the bias tape.
3. We process one of the shoulder seams: we grind, weave and iron it, or we process it with a double seam, or we process it with a sewing seam.
4. Then we turn over or turn the neckline with an oblique trim, iron it and process the second shoulder seam. Again carefully iron and process the armholes. Then, side seams and bottom.
5. If you process the top with facings, then you need to first turn the sprout and armholes of the back, then the sprout and armholes of the shelf. Turn the back inside out and, inserting a shelf inside the turned “straps”, stitch the shoulder seams.
6. Then, turn the product inside out, sweep, iron and lay the finishing lines.
7. Only the side seams and bottom remain.
