Style and consumption of fabric, from which to sew a sheath dress

This sheath dress is suitable for girls and women of any age and looks good on proportional figures of various fullness.

Fabric consumption will be from 220 to 250 cm with a width of 140 cm.

The consumption of "red" fabric is 40 - 60 cm with a width of 140 cm.

Pattern of a combi sheath dress with red rice2Pattern of a combi sheath dress with red rice1Several options are possible for this dress, but thin suiting fabric will be the most suitable. The most comfortable to wear option will be a fabric consisting of natural and synthetic fibers.

Denim works well too.

Linen is good enough. You can use either synthetic or artificial linen-gabardine, or natural linen with additives. Pure natural linen is also suitable.

Both “heavy silk” and taffeta are well suited.

You can also consider dense stretch fabrics with little stretch. Only with little stretch.

Pattern of a combi sheath dress with red rice3As you can see, summer fabrics are enough to sew this dress. Of course, for the demi-season option, you can use wool suit and dress fabrics. And dress wool with a small content of synthetics or artificial fibers can be considered an ideal option.

Please note that not only plain and fabrics made of threads of different colors (jeans, taffeta) or melange will look good, but also fabrics with a small pattern. For example, in a small cage or a small strip, a small “houndstooth”, “herringbone” or jacquard with a small rapport will do.

As a companion fabric, it is desirable to choose a thin, stable fabric. A satin fabric or other thin sliding fabric of the dress range is well suited. It is not advisable to take a lining. Natural fabrics are also best avoided to avoid shrinkage and shedding.

How to cut a combi sheath dress

Pattern of a combi sheath dress with red rice4Let's start with the fact that all the details of the shelf are asymmetric and should be cut, spreading the fabric in one layer. In order to eliminate annoying cutting errors that can happen even with very experienced professionals, all asymmetrical patterns have the inscription "FACE", which indicates the front side of the finished product.

As for the semi-reliefs, in the largest sizes (58-64), the semi-reliefs are “reduced” to the chest tuck from the armhole.

Now about how you can accurately and simply cut out the facings of the neck and armholes.

It is possible to cut both according to ready-made patterns (Fig. 2), and according to the product in the stage after trying on and making adjustments.

In any case, we cut out blanks of facings from dublerin or adhesive interlining, depending on the fabric and the preferences of the couturier. Cut out without seam allowances. Please note that seam allowances should be added after gluing the blanks to the fabric.

See sewing master class video how to cut out the facing of the neck according to the product after trying on.

As for cutting the red part. Nothing complicated, the share direction does not have to be observed exactly, it is enough that none of the cuts falls on the share thread.

Back to the table of contents

Seam allowances and notches

Shoulder, side, relief, seam connecting the shelf with a detachable part and the detachable part with a red detail - 1 cm each (Fig. 3).

On the sprout (the neck of the back) and the neck (the neck of the shelf), as well as on the armhole and rim, allowances are not added, since adding allowances along concave lines reduces their length and distorts the pattern. Allowances are also not added to the flying cuts of the facings and the cuts of the red part hidden from the eyes.

Add 3 cm along the bottom of the back, shelf and flyaway part to process the bottom into a hem with an open cut. That is, the bottom should be duplicated, overcast, folded and hemmed with blind stitches by machine or by hand. But this is already, completing work on the dress.

Let us dwell on the duplication of allowances along the bottom (Fig. 3). We cut out the dubbing according to the patterns of the shelf and the flying part without seam allowances. When cutting, we apply blanks of dubbing the bottom to the pattern and draw a line of allowance.

Now about notches, without which it is impossible to sew this dress and notches that facilitate the sewing process.

  1. Notch for the continuation of the cut between the chest tuck and the warehouse.
  2. Notches along the fold of the detachable part on one and the other side of the fold line of the part.
  3. Notches on the bottom.
  4. Notch in the corner of the side seam of the shelf and the cut of the connection of the shelf with the detachable part.
  5. As well as notches at the waist to facilitate the assembly process of the product.

Do-it-yourself step-by-step sequence for cutting a straight dress

Due to the presence of asymmetrical and symmetrical parts, it is desirable to cut in three stages (Fig. 4).

  1. We cut out asymmetrical details by laying out the fabric in one layer. To avoid mistakes, you can lay out the details on the front side of the fabric.
  2. We cut out the back details, having previously folded the fabric in half along the width of the back details with allowances. You can continue to cut in a turn, as shown in the figure. The second parts, in this case, are cut out according to the first parts already cut out.
  3. We leave the opening of the facings for the last. On the lunges of the fabric we paste dubbing blanks, taking into account the allowances for the seams along which they will be connected to each other.

How to sew a combi case dress with your own hands step by step

There are no surprises here, the sequence of sewing operations, as in a regular sheath dress.

  1. Shelf assembly.
  2. Back assembly with zipper basting along the middle seam.
  3. Sweeping shoulder and side cuts for trying on.
  4. Preparing to try on the flyaway part - iron the fold, tack the red part with large oblique stitches.
  5. Let's do an example. At the same time, after refining the fit, the flyaway part is attached to the shelf with pins.
  6. Making adjustments outlined in the fitting.
  7. Processing a detachable part and connecting it with a shelf.
  8. Processing of shoulder, side seams, stitching of a lightning.
  9. Processing armholes and necks.
  10. Bottom processing.
