Backpack pattern description, consumption and choice of fabric for sewing

Backpack kit includes:

  1. detail of the "front panels" with the marking of the folds;
  2. pocket detail, and
  3. details of a leather handle and "loops".

Free backpack pattern photo2For sewing a backpack, you should use a dense and fairly rigid fabric.

Coarse linen, heavy denim, and synthetic fabrics of similar thickness and weight will work. In addition to the listed materials, upholstery fabrics can be used. Of course, special materials can be considered the best: cordura, oxford, twill.

As a butt, so that the backpack does not deform, a gang or any hard doubler, as well as a shabrak, is suitable, but you can do without any pads.

Leather parts can be cut out from both sufficiently thick natural and artificial leather or from the main fabric, but in this case, the edges of the parts must be folded over and carefully ironed.

The consumption of the main fabric can be calculated both along the length and along the width of the part of the front panels, that is, it will be 44 or 100 cm with a width of 140 - 150 cm.

Handle length - within 150 - 200 cm.

It is advisable to make an oblique trim for processing sections yourself, since the commercially available one does not have the necessary wear resistance. The consumption of the inlay is 200 cm, but it is better to make a little more.

How to sew a backpack bag from scratch with your own hands at home

As you can see, the cut of the backpack consists of rectangles.

The "bar above the eyelets" (oblique hatching) can be cut both together with the "front panels" and separately (see photo).

Free backpack pattern photo3In the second case, you will need a seam allowance so that after sewing into one plate, the part does not decrease in size.

You can duplicate with a glue bando the entire “front panels” part with hatching or only the unshaded (white) parts.

When duplication is completed, a pocket should be made by ironing the hem and securing the entrance to the pocket with a stitch - the hem is larger on the side of the entrance.

The pocket is superimposed and adjusted according to the markings on the outside or on the inside of the backpack.

Then, the hem area is ironed in the “bar over the loops”. If the bar is cut off, it is stitched, and the stitching line has “gaps” (loops). The bar is ironed in half along a horizontal turquoise line (see pattern) and secured with finishing stitches.

Vertical cuts of "front panels" are edged separately left and right.

The “inner side” is folded inward and ironed. Along the fold - finishing line.

Next, a line for pulling the rope-handle. Of course, the workpiece is pre-ironed. The markup is on the drawing.

Now, the seam connecting the "sides", and you can pull the cord (rope). The ends of the cord are fastened together and hidden in a leather handle.

To simplify the task, holes are made in the skin with an awl, a securely connected cord is glued to the handle blank.

The handle is sewn by hand. Happy owners of an industrial machine, leather needles and a special foot with one leather horn can perform this operation on a typewriter. In the same way, a leather "loop" is made.
